I did my warmup sketch today while listening to the audio book of Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. Here I portray young Devin hanging from a tree in a hopeless attempt to grow taller.

ThundeRevolver

My OKC Thunder came through last night to clinch a spot in their first NBA Finals. My friend Sarah Graalman recently wrote an excellent piece for This Land Magazine in which she captures the state of imminent doom that comes with growing up a fan of the Oklahoma State Cowboys (it's also about being an Oklahoman in NYC). Being an ardent fan of US International Soccer has cemented this feeling.

So when the Thunder were down 15 at halftime, that good ol' feeling of despair started creeping in again. Fortunately, the Thunder are a different beast and might just give me some hope for future sports. Anyhow, today's warmup sketch is an ode to Durant, Westbrook, & Harden a la the Beatles. Instead of Perkins as the fourth figure, I could have drawn Ibaka, Sefolosha, or perhaps even Collison -- but who could resist that menacing profile of Mr. Perkins!

Seeing as how I've never read any John Carter from Mars, every time I hear its mention, I think of Jimmy Carter.  And seeing as how I was born during the Carter administration, I've never heard this joke before though I'm certain it's been made.  

Did this one all in Photoshop.  I oil paint-ified it though the original might be a little better?

The IT Crowd

I've been a fan of the British TV show The IT Crowd for some time now, though I can't stand The Big Bang Theory which at first glance seems to draw from the same material.  But I think that the main difference is that the IT Crowd uses geek subculture to create the humor whereas in The Big Bang Theory it is just the punchline.  Anyhow, Tim and I have been watching the latest season on Netflix which spawned my warm-up drawing today.

Peanuts Kamandi

There's something very Chippendale about Kamandi and so I felt the urge to draw him dancing.  All attempts were too tawdry and seeing as how this is a family-friendly blog, I thought I'd tone it down a bit.  So here you have my version of Kamandi dancing like a Peanuts character.

Captain America Casting

Back when the Captain America movie was first announced, there was a lot of debate in the Sinderson household about who exactly should play Mr. Steve Rogers.  For obvious reasons all foreign actors were out of the picture.  It would be too easy for Cap to slip into major cheese-mode so I thought you'd have to cast an actor with some serious acting chops.  My choice was Michael C. Hall of Dexter and Six Feet Under fame (who I've attempted top sketch up top).  I was skeptical but pleasantly surprised with Chris Evans' performance but I still wonder...

Hugo Weaving, on the other hand, was perfectly cast as the Red Skull.  While I might have preferred the villain to be more grounded in reality, the Red Skull made for a sinister figure even before he took off his "human face".  And what can be more sinister than a villain with the voice of Werner Herzog?  After the movie I brought up the idea that Hugo Weaving seemed to be doing a Werner Herzog impersonation for the Red Skull.  I believe my wife's response was, "You are probably the only person who thought that."  This of course lead me to do a Google search where I found an interview with Hugo Weaving where he stated that he did indeed base the character's accent on Herzog.  And for most everyone (including me) who doesn't know what the German director looks like, I have included him in the second sketch.

Creature (not Stan Lee)

In which I discover just how difficult it is to draw paisleys...  I did this yesterday but was having connectivity issues, thus the day late.  It's not Stan Lee but could be Hugh Hefner (two people that I'd enjoy seeing a senior citizen's version of Freaky Friday.)
