Big Barda

Here’s my Big Barda drawing. I always liked this character (hello, Si!)… I was tempted to draw her in her armor, but I also like that she’s often shown in her New Gods civvies. So here she is. Don’t mess with Barda.

I also posted up the pencils up at my own blog to help advertise the Women of Wonder charity event with a redirect here to see the finished version.

This version is done in colored pencils,12” x 9” (305mm x 228mm) but I might work this one up into line and digital color at some point.

All I Need is a Miracle

Still haven't read this yet - if I have any money left after paying my dues I'll get right to it

Jack Kirby's New Gods-- Parademons! UPDATED! IN COLOUR!

Surprisingly hard to find some good Kirby reference of Darkseid's footsoldiers, the Parademons, so I kind of cobbled mine together from some toys, the Superman animated series, and my own jumbled memories. Coulda used more Kirby crackle but, Hell, I ain't got all day.

UPDATED!!

Check the comments section on this post-- Simon Fraser  suggested that this piece would look better in 'colour' (he's Scottish) and I invited him, or anyone really to color it in, because as noted above, I ain't got all day. So Simon colored, it took him 20 minutes, and I'm eating crow. It does look much better, and he even added more substantial Kirby Crackle. In my defense, I wouldn't have colored it so nicely :)

Big Barda Singing Karaoke...

Kirby's New Gods: Kalibak!

Sweet Boots FTW

Anyone notice how awesome Darkseid's boots are? Also I just thought I spelled his name wrong, but I guess I before E except after DARK.

I guess he's kinda pretty, and looks more like Death from the 7th Seal, but whatever! I bet he's got some long, luxurious black hair under that helmet.

New Gods - GRANNY GOODNESS

Anyone who thinks that Darkseid is the scariest thing on Apokalips is clearly and tragically wrong!

Jack Kirby's New Gods bonus post

There's not much that all of us Drawbridge cartoonists at Hypothetical Island and Deep 6 share in common... we're all carbon-based forms of life (hopefully), we are all or more or less bipedal, and we all love Jack Kirby.

A couple moons ago Michel Fiffe and I were hanging around the studios one weekend talking about inkers whom we've loved (and not loved) when it occurred to ourselves that, being modern hardcore do-it-all-yourself cartoonists, we have seldom, if ever, had our work inked by others. A pact was made, we each penciled a pin-up, exchanged it with one another, and inked that mutha. Her's my pencils:

I chose as my subject that most Kirbian of Jack Kirby characters, Big Barda, along with her husband super-escape artist Mr. Miracle. I was actually introduced initially to this duo in the pages of Giffen and DeMatteis's JLI, a book I LOVE SO MUCH THAT IT HURTS! I mention this because you'll notice I gave Mr. M a nose, which as near as I can tell was a JLI innovation. Now it was Fiffe's turn:

In addition to proving himself the undisputed modern master of Kirby crackle, Fiffe also shamed me with an awesome Boom Tube effect, and rectified my Kirby-inaccurate Mr. Miracle nose. The most important piece of the drawing, Big Barda's hips, he left unaltered.

Not one to rest on his laurels, he has since gone on to add color ON THE ORIGINAL PAPER because he is a man without fear. So far, this is all I've seen of it:

But I'm sure you will agree it's awesome sauce. Keep checking Michel's blog to see when he posts the finished color as well as all the other cool stuff he has cooking there.

Check back here later today as I'll probably have something New Gods and warm-uppy posted.

New Gods

The first issue of the "New Gods" I ever saw was at a rummage sale, and it
featured "Mantis." I've had a soft spot for him ever since.
Why? I don't know.
I redesigned him slightly.

He needed a bigger, more conical-like helmet.
