So I had my little joke drawing Dr. Hugo Strange earlier today, but with 2 hours to
go...I decided to do a sketch of THE Dr. Strange!
I even colored it(Unlike a certain Scottish artist I know).

It felt so good...

A day late: Spider-Woman, to Know her is to Fear Her

Owing to a truly manic Tuesday, I'm a day late in getting up this drawing of one of my all-time favorite characters, Jessica Drew, the original Spider-Woman.

I know that she's been restored to her former prominence in Marvel Comics through the work of Brian Michael Bendis, but, man, I was digging on her way back before it was all cool to do so, as evidenced by these circa 1995 Spider-Woman samples I did. What was I thinking drawing Spider-Woman in 1995? I should have been drawing Youngblood or Bloodspot or Bloodblood or some sort of crap.

Anyway, here's to Spider-Woman, an odd duck of a character with an amazing design, whose odd duck of a series has many, many cool and weird happenings in it, as well as some great artwork by Carmine Infantino and Steve Leialoha, among others. Check it out!

Today issue #3 of Marvels "indie" anthology Strange Tales hits comic stands, this time featuring stories by frequent Drawbridger Tim Hamilton and some guy who I sit next to at the studio Dean Haspiel. Tim's story features Machine Man and Morbius the Living Vampire, showcasing his love for both artificial life and the undead ; Dean's features Woodgod and the Thing, in a testament to his ongoing passion for  both brawny shirtless guys and ungulates. I drew all 4 characters going at at it, Brooklyn style. Check it out now, at comic shops everywhere.

Strange Tales

Today we're celebrating the release of "Strange Tales issue 3." This
volume of Strange Tales featured work by myself, Farel Dalrymple, Paul Maybury, Dean Haspiel and many other familiar names around these parts.

Long ago Strange Tales used to be the place Marvel published
it's lesser known characters. It used to be a book shared by
Nick Fury and Doctor Strange, and thus is my reason in doing
this "Doctor Strange" sketch!

Alpha Flight: What the Puck?

Studiomate and fellow Drawbridger Reilly Brown had a hand last week (alongside writer Jim McCann) in resurrecting the cult-favorite Canadian Marvel superteam Alpha Flight last week, so today we're all honoring this feat by drawing, you guessed it, Alpha Flight. Each member of Alpha Flight has died, oh, about 7 million times before, but I have a feeling this time their return will stick.

I drew Puck, one of the only members of Alpha Flight not to return from the dead in Reilly's one-shot. Ah, Puck... As a Canadian superteam, almost all of the members of Alpha Flight embodied some stereotypical concept of Canada. It was lead by Guardian, a guy in a Maple leaf suit, there was an Eskimo goddess, a Native American Medicine man, a Sasquatch, and so on. And then there was Puck. A dwarf who dressed up as a hockey puck. Because Canadians love hockey.

Oh, Puck. I have a theory that Alpha Flight creator John Byrne had wanted to use Canadian superhero Wolverine in his Alpha Flight book and was denied by Marvels' editors, so he went and created a character who was even shorter, hairier, uglier and Canadianer than Wolverine to take his place. Slap a big "P" on his torso and it's done!

Alpha Flight

I haven't seen an Alpha Flight comic since 1984 or so, but one
member of the team is a big sasquatch creature, and I'm a big fan of
sasquatch!!!

New Dazzler Costume!

I figure that once you give Dazzler some roller skates and disco ball, there's ain't a hell of a lot else she needs. Oh, and maybe some music...

Dazzler Roller Derby!

I have little of the affinity for the character that Simon seems to evince for her, but I always kind of dug her 70's design. I took what worked best from that get up (a general sparkliness and roller skates) and took off with it. Around where I live in Brooklyn there are a lot of advertisements for roller derby games, and they contain superheroic illustrations of hot roller derby girls. I liked the intense implied physicality of those illustrations, and roller derby get-ups in general, and brought some of that to my redesign of the former Disco Dazzler. Now, she plays hard, she rolls hard, and she glows hard.

Sharpie sketch, as I'm still on the road. When I return home, I may do a more detailed piece for my own amusement.

With NYCC taking over NYC for the rest of the week, Simon thought we would redesign Dazzler’s costume this Wednesday over at Drawbridge.

Deepesh Lord of light and sun!
Born in Delhi , the daughter of the goddess Lakshmi and a human scientist, Deepesh is imbued with the power to turn her mantra chants into blinding light.

Being young and untrained though, she accidentally blinded herself at age 12 when she disobeyed her mother and put on a massive lazar light show using her powers.

Now she wanders the Earth, as punishment for being so disobedient, helping mortals with the aid of her magic cat, Dhruv who acts as her eyes when needed and often eats Lasagna to the detriment of his health.
